Atari 800

Hi! How are you doing? I recently bought an Atari 800 on eBay. However the seller just put the Atari in a box and mailed it. No wrapping or whatsoever. Just stacking the 1050 drive (in the ad he showed an 810 but ok) and the PSU on top of the 800. So on arrival the case of the 800 was cracked in multiple places.

Any chance you would know someone who is selling an 800? Listings on eBay are interesting but shipping / import is always so expensive.

In the meantime I'm using ChatGPT's 6502 Assembly Assistent and Atari800MacX to study machine language. Bringing 50 years of engineering together ;-)

Regarding your questions: Unfortunately I know the problem with the old 800 computer too, I bought about 10 or 12 ATARI 800s and just as many ATARI 400s from the USA in the last few years and 3 packages were totally broken, the cases were broken into 1000 pieces, that's very annoying.

I always contacted the seller beforehand and asked him to pack the ATARI like "raw eggs" so that it would arrive in good condition here in Germany. This usually worked out well. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone at the moment who is selling a good ATARI 800 at a good price. I still have several myself, but everything I had too much of or left over has already been bought from me by ABBUC members.

Would you say that https://www.ebay.nl/itm/176450049264 has a fair price? I like the Incognito enhancement, but I don't know if it's the best option. Although searching through the forums everybody is very fond of the Incognito. But why is it not produced anymore? Besides that I'm a little worried about "Cart Bay Switch disabled" What does that mean?

And thanks for your tip on "raw eggs", that's a perfect instruction!

yes Incognito is awesome, I also have it installed in my 800!!! I love it 8-) !

If required, it makes the 800 100% compatible with XL/XE systems with up to 1MB RAM.

The price for the Ebay offer is quite high, but I know the seller briefly, he is also on the AtariAge forum ( https://atariage.com/ ). The special thing about him is that he rebuilds normal, unmodified computers with extensions (VBXE, Incognito, U1MB etc.) and then sells these rebuilt computers for a much higher price (he earns money with them).

You should also not forget that the seller is based in the UK, which is not the EU and the UK charges utopian customs duties and taxes on top of the shipping costs :roll: :( .

Maybe you'd better wait for another offer, or I'll make you an offer, that I look regularly and if I find something good, I'll let you know.

Yes EUR 440 adds up to more than EUR 600 with shipping and tax. That is indeed a whole lot of money. Brexit was * very * very * unfortunate!

The 800 I recently bought in the US was $ 100,00 but added also another $148 shipping + tax. But still much cheaper than EUR 600.

And off course there is no rush. So it would be absolutely very much appreciated if you could look around a bit.

The one you mentioned has repaired cracks, so I'm a little worried about that. I saw that the incognito is no longer available, so I think I just sit tight and wait a little longer.

In the meantime I'm looking for a replacement PSU for the damaged 800. It came with the original CO17945. I thought that the Mean Well GSM36E09-P1J would work, but it seems that the dimensions of the plug are slightly too small. Would you happen to know a suitable PSU? Perhaps I'm not looking very well, but I just can't find it on the Forum?

Yes, you're right, I've also read about the repaired cracks in the housing. That is of course a disadvantage.

Otherwise wait and be patient, I keep checking the internet to see if I can find something suitable!

Regarding the power supply: Yes, as far as I know the CO17945 is the 110V/9V (AC/AC) version I think you use 230V in your country? I still have a few original CO17945s left here. I got myself a couple of suitable 230/110V converters from Goobay back then, so the 110V-US power supplies work perfectly in Europe.

If you like, I can offer you a CO17945. I think I also have a suitable 230V -> 110V adapter for it.

Well my Goobay arrived today. Apparently they switched it for a Nedis converter but it looks the same and it does the job! Thanks for your friendly advice!

Although the 800 is crashed it does power up. And I connected it with a monitor cable from my 600XL to a Samsung monitor. I played Centipede so the cpu etc are fine. The keyboard however is broken for about 5 keys.

But it is nice to see the 800 powering up :) Do you use a NTSC to PAL converter like

Or do I need to switch the Rom?
